Another evening option for local news in North Carolina’s coastal areas are coming.
Just like some of the stories we have posted so far in the past 48 hours, Monday September 5th is the day that WSFX 26 will launch FOX Wilmington News at 7:00, a new half-hour newscast produced by their sister station WECT 6 (NBC). It will be the ONLY newscast on at that time in the market, however its not the first and I’ll explain about that later.
The new newscast is branded as Local News. Better Time and the station explains the new broadcast as a broadcast “designed for viewers who want their local television news and weather, but do not get home in time for newscasts traditionally offered at 5:00 or 6:00pm.”
The newscast will be anchored by Marissa Hundley, who is a relative newcomer to the station since she joined in January from WTKR 3 (CBS) in Norfolk.
WECT 6 and WSFX 26’s News Director, Scott Saxton:
“Our news team works around the clock to keep you updated on all of our products. This latest project will give you a chance to get updated on news during a time in which no other local news is available on television.”
Again, it will be the ONLY ones on at that time but it won’t be the first. Back in 2008, WWAY 3 (ABC) launched a weeknight half-hour 7:00pm newscast for WILM 10 (CBS) through an agreement. It only lasted for 11 months due to possible low ratings at the time.
In my opinion though, I believe that this one will last because with the ratings and success that WECT 6 usually has, it usually translates over to WSFX 26 so I believe that this 7:00pm newscast will go very well for them. I wish them all well in this new adventure.
