FIRST ON THE BLOG: It seems like there’s been some changes in the KESQ/KDFX duopoly, especially in its 10:00pm weeknight newscast.
Just recently, KESQ 42 (Cable 3; will use that for reporting purposes) has recently taken over production once again of sister station KDFX 33 (Cable 11; will use that as well)’s nightly 10:00pm newscast. It has taken over from KPSP-CD 38 (CBS; Cable 2) which used to produced the 10:00pm newscast, but KESQ 42 used to produce this newscast before at least once under NewsChannel 3 at 10:00 on FOX 11 before the KESQ 3/KPSP 2 merger in 2012, at which point it became CBS Local 2 News Nightcast at 10:00.
But now that KESQ 3 has taken over once again, the name has changed yet again and this time, to NewsChannel 3 – First at 10:00 on FOX 11 and the newscast has seemed to expanded to a full hour, at least on weeknights. It remains as a half-hour newscast on weekends, but KESQ 3 produces it 7 nights a week under its name and talent.
It competes against KMIR 36 (NBC; Cable 6)’s half-hour 10:00pm nightly newscast on its sister station KPSE-LD 50 (MyTV; Cable 13) under KMIR News at 10:00 on KPSE MyTV. This leaves KESQ 3’s production on KDFX 11 as the ONLY home of local weeknight news at 10:30pm in the market and I believe its the first time that this market has ever had an hour-long weeknight newscast.
So a change in name, a change in production and a expansion in a familiar newscast. I think Palm Springs and the entire Coachella Valley already likes this.
