WGCL is adding a weekend morning newscast, once again.

WGCL-TV 46 / Atlanta (“CBS 46”)

FIRST ON THE BLOG: WGCL used to have a weekend morning newscast until it was slowly and quietly cancelled, around two-three years ago. But it seems like WGCL hasn’t learned from that because the station is going to try yet again.

Starting next weekend on Saturday October 1st, WGCL 46 will add weekend morning news on both Saturdays and Sundays. The station will add four hours of total weekend morning news coverage in all.

First on Saturdays, the weekend morning newscast will be aired from 6:00-7:00 and 9:00-10:00am, sandwiching in between CBS This Morning: Saturday from 7:00-9:00am. In terms of competition, it will compete at 6:00am against WSB 2 (ABC), WAGA 5 (FOX) and WXIA 11 (NBC) for local news in that timeslot in the market. At 9:00am, it will compete against just WXIA 11.

For Sundays, it will be aired from 6:00-8:00am and will compete against WSB 2 and WAGA 5 in those timeslots in the market, which also airs continuous news from 6:00-8:00am (with WSB 2 also airing from 9:00-11:00am and WAGA 5 for an extra half-hour from 8:00-8:30am).

This is the second time that WGCL 46 is doing this as I have previously mentioned in the intro, WGCL 46 used to have a weekend morning newscast, first on Sundays and then on Saturdays. When it was cancelled, it was first done so on Sundays before cancelling it on Saturdays and effectively ending the station’s first attempt at weekend morning news. And now, it’ll try again at doing so.

I’m not sure how successful WGCL 46 will be at it this time, but we’ll see if viewers will like it or continue to deflect the station and instead watch the others, just like how Atlantans have watched local TV news since 1994 by ignoring WGCL 46. But at least give them a try to try again and hopeful that it can work this time.

  1. Before the network switch in 94 didn’t WGCL I think at the time WGCL was WGNX have their late news at 10:00pm? Was WGCL or WGNX affiliated with FOX before the network switch in 94?

  2. Atlanta has seen major network affiliation switches twice. 1980 was when WSB (2) and WXIA (11) swapped NBC and ABC affiliations, and that was before my time. I remember the 1994 switch. WAGA (5) was legacy CBS affiliate, WATL (36) was charter Fox affiliate, and WGNX/WGCL (46) was independent, along with WVEU/WUPA (69). Fox outbid CBS for NFC football package, and Fox merged with New World and Citicasters stations (stations leaving ABC, CBS, and NBC, to hitch up with Fox)… a major media coup. WAGA took Fox away from WATL upon ending its then 45-year union with CBS. “Georgia’s News at Ten” was Atlanta and Georgia’s first 10PM/Primetime newscast, and was a very decent newscast… CBS avoided moving to WATL or WUPA, since those stations didn’t have news, and WGCL having news since 1989.

WGCL attempting weekend morning news yet again, it’ll be interesting to see which reporter gets picked to anchor. I could see the station going with Rebekka Schramm, Adam Murphy, Vince Sims, or investigative reporter Karyn Greer, or maybe Just a Minute commentator Amanda Davis going full-time. Schramm has been there since 2001, and Murphy since 2003. Sims previously anchored weekday mornings, before Gloria Neal and Bobby Kaple were hired, and is mostly fill-in. Greer was part of original 1989 news team, spent 16 years at WXIA, and was rehired last year. I don’t know whether Davis would be interested in continuing/reviving her Atlanta TV news career.
