FIRST ON THE BLOG: If you ever need a surprise story for the year for what we cover on the blog, this story may just do it.

It seems like starting next Monday, January 16th, WWCP 8 will debut a brand new two-hour morning newscast, a potential first in the station’s history. I don’t know the name of the broadcast as of yet but will utilize the FOX 8 News brand and will be on air weekday mornings from 7:00-9:00am. It will more likely be produced by WJAC 6 (NBC) since it also produces the nightly 10:00pm newscast for WWCP 8 under an agreement. It will create the area’s

It will create the area’s ONLY local news on at that time block in the market, but considering how small the market is, it also gets stations from nearby Pittsburgh. In that market, it only has an hour-long morning newscast after 7:00am (KDKA 2 – CBS on WPCW 19 – CW with just an hour from 7:00-8:00am) so it’s a surprise when a small market, will have more local morning news after 7:00am than a big market.

This comes on the heels of the recent launch of sister station WATM 23’s newscasts. There recently, it has launched weekday news in the morning at 6:30am and in the evening at 6:00pm as well as every night at 11:00pm and are titled as the WATM NewsCentre (yes, Canadian spelling).

So for the first time in West Central Pennsylvania, local morning news from 7:00-9:00am. Who would’ve thought in market #104?
