FIRST ON THE BLOG: The struggles at WNWO continue while WNYT expands further.
Just recently, WNWO 24 has dropped its weeknight 5:00 and 5:30pm newscasts as it further consolidates its news operation while the newscasts are now produced out of South Bend at sister station WSBT 22 (CBS). Two episodes of Judge Judy have replaced the newscasts and now airs that program from 4:00-6:00pm. It has also cut the Saturday news at 6:00 and 11:00pm as well and now, the only newscasts the station airs are weekday morning news at 6:30am and half-hour news on Sundays-Fridays at 6:00 and 11:00pm. Talk about commitment, huh? Not really. Btw, this leaves WTOL 11 (CBS) and WTVG 13 (ABC) with the two stations left in the market airing local weeknight news at 5:00 and 5:30pm.
Now, in another different market, WNYT 13 will soon expand on Saturday mornings. Starting Saturday March 18th, WNYT 13 will add another hour on Saturday mornings at 6:00am. NewsChannel 13 Today will air for two hours on Saturday mornings… first from 6:00-7:00am and again from 8:00-9:00am. The 6:00am hour competes against WRGB 6 (CBS) and WTEN 10 (ABC) for local news at that time in the market while its all alone at 8:00am. The Sunday morning edition also airs for two hours from 7:00-9:00am.
So while one continues to drop its commitment to local news, another is expanding that commitment. Two different worlds in contrast.
