Finally… more morning news in Tampa Bay, thanks to WFLA on WTTA.

WFLA-TV 8 / Tampa – St. Petersburg (“NewsChannel 8”)
WTTA 38 / St. Petersburg – Tampa (“Great 38”)

It looks like WTVT will FINALLY gain a competitor in the morning but it won’t take place until August.

Starting Monday, August 7th, WFLA 8 will launch a two-hour extension of its weekday morning newscast over on its sister station, WTTA 38, known in the market as Great 38 (see? it rhymes). NewsChannel 8 Today on Great 38 will be on-air weekday mornings from 7:00-9:00 a.m. This will be the first-ever over-the-air competition to WTVT 13 (FOX)’s long-running and highly successful FOX 13 News – Good Day Tampa Bay (on-air since August 1994 – 22 and a half years as of this post). Counting cable, it will also compete against Bay News 9 or the Sarasota-based WSNN-LD 39 (24-hour local news), home to The Suncoast News Network. This will add an additional 10 hours to WFLA’s weekly news coverage.

The extra two hours will be anchored by WFLA’s current 4:30-7:00 a.m. weekday morning news team, Gayle Guyardo and Marco Villarreal with Traffic and Weather Together on the 8’s from StormTeam 8‘s AMS-CBM and NWA/Sealed Meteorologist Leigh Spann and traffic reporter Leslee Lacey.

WFLA 8 and WTTA 38’s Vice President and General Manager, Andy Alford:

“This is a tremendous opportunity to bring local 8 On Your Side coverage to Tampa Bay in a new time period.”

WFLA 8 and WTTA 38’s Vice President of News, Bill Berra:

“Our viewers tell us they want and need 8 On Your Side news, weather and traffic from NewsChannel 8 throughout the morning. We intend to serve those needs from 7:00-9:00 a.m. each weekday morning.”

For those in the Tampa Bay area who are looking for WTTA 38, this is where it can be found:

  • Bright House/Spectrum Channel 6 (SD) and 1006 (HD)
  • Frontier (formerly FiOS) Channel 14 (SD) and 514 (HD)
  • DirectTV Channel 38 (SD/HD)
  • DISH Channel 38 (SD/HD)
  • Comcast Channel 435 (HD)
  • Over-The-Air Channel 38.1

So there’ll finally be some competition for local morning news from 7:00-9:00 a.m. in Tampa Bay. I say its about time this is happening. Even if its just three months away.
