KFMB adding more weekday news for its new CW subchannel.

KFMB-TV 8 / San Diego (“CBS 8”)
KFMB-DT 8.2 / San Diego (“The CW San Diego”; starting May 31st)

I’ve been distant to hold onto this story for months because there was a lot of unconfirmed details back in January but now its all confirmed in mid-May. So I’ve held onto this story until now.

Starting May 31st, KFMB 8 will be the new home to The CW affiliation in San Diego. And with it comes more local news. But what’ll be surprising to you is that its only 5-days a week. Here’s what you need to know.

Starting on the same day, KFMB 8 will add a two-hour expansion to its weekday morning newscast called News 8 Morning Extra on The CW San Diego. Broadcast weekday mornings from 7:00-9:00 a.m., it will compete against KUSI 51 (Cable 9; Ind)’s KUSI News – Good Morning San Diego and KSWB 69 (Cable 5; FOX)’s FOX 5 Morning News in those timeslots in the market. The newscast will be anchored by KFMB veterans Dan Cohen and Nichelle Medina with CBS 8 MicroClimate Weather from weather anchor Heather Myers.

Up next will be a half-hour weeknight newscast at 7:00 p.m. called, obviously, News 8 at 7:00 on The CW San Diego. That newscast will be anchored by the current weeknight 5:00, 5:30, 6:30 and 11:00 p.m. team: Carlo Cecchetto and Barbara-Lee Edwards, CBS 8 MicroClimate Weather from AMS/Sealed Chief Meteorologist Matt Baylow and Sports Director Kyle Kraska. This will compete against the long-established KGTV 10 (ABC)’s half-hour weeknight 10 News at 7:00 for local news at that time in the market.

Finally, another primetime newscast at 10:00 p.m. in San Diego but this time, it will be a half-hour newscast. News 8 at 10:00 on The CW San Diego will be anchored by Eric Kahnert and Marcella Lee while Baylow and Kraska will retain their roles in delivering the weather and sports, respectively. That will compete against the long-established and hour-long primetime newscasts on KUSI 51 and KSWB 69, which have been around since 1990 and 2008, respectively.

Now, what’s even more interesting about this is that there will be NO weekend newscasts, whatsoever. Unlike XETV 6 (CW; soon converting to a Televisa-Spanish service network) and its previous newscast schedule, there will be no weekend news whatsoever. That includes weekend mornings, which will air The CW’s E/I programming on Saturdays and paid programming on Sundays and weekends at 10:00 p.m., which will have repeats of Seinfeld on instead. Also, original reports came out that there would be hour-long news at 4:00 and 10:00 p.m. but instead, half-hour news will be offered at 7:00 and 10:00 p.m. with no weekend news. This will leave KUSI 51 and KSWB 69 as the only stations in the market to offer hour-long primetime news at 10:00 p.m., 7 nights a week.

KFMB 8’s News Director, Dean Elwood:

“We’re really excited to put the same quality of CBS News 8 onto our new CW affiliate. Now San Diego viewers can get the news they love at a time that’s convenient for them, no matter which station they choose.”

KFMB 8’s President and General Manager, Alberto Mier y Terán:

“We are thrilled to be adding the CW to the KFMB family. It enhances our strong multimedia platform in San Diego and helps us to better serve all San Diegans with compelling programming and award winning local news.”

By the way, if you wanna know where you can find the new subchannel for those in the San Diego area, then here’s where you can find it:

  • Over-the-Air: Channel 8.2
  • AT&T U-Verse: Channel 6 (SD) and 1006 (HD)
  • Charter Spectrum: Channel 6 (SD) and 1212 (HD)
  • COX: Channel 6 (SD) and 1006 (HD)
  • DirecTV: Channel 9 (SD/HD)
  • DISH: Channel 6 (SD/HD)

So somewhat good news for KFMB 8 and its viewers in that at least there’ll be more local news. But we’ll see if, through the affiliation switch and all, that viewers will be tuning in.

  1. I figured KFMB would fill the void for the lost news on XETV. I predicted they would produce a 10:00pm newscast and morning news.

  2. My guess is KFMB would assume the CW subchannel get revved up before adding weekend newscasts… choosing to focus on weekday/weeknight news. Hopefully we get to see weekend morning and weekend evening news on CW San Diego channel eventually.
