A big local news expansion has taken place at WTVA and WLOV.

WTVA 9 / Tupelo – Columbus – West Point, MS (“WTVA 9”)
WTVA 9.2 / Tupelo – Columbus – West Point, MS (“WTVA 9 ABC”)
WLOV-TV 27 / West Point – Columbus – Tupelo, MS (“WLOV FOX”)

FIRST ON THE BLOG: It looks like a major expansion has recently taken place involving sister stations WTVA and WLOV. And this expansion has put its only other competition on the market to shame.

Just recently, WTVA 9 has expanded its local news to more timeslots covering all 7 days of the week.

First, we begin with the 6:00 p.m. news. That newscast, WTVA News at 6:00, is now only seen on WTVA 9’s main channel as the ABC subchannel now carries a half-hour 6:30 p.m. newscast called WTVA 9 News at 6:30 on WTVA 9 ABC. It’s the ONLY newscast on in the market now and it has shifted Entertainment TONIGHT to 6:00 p.m.

Meanwhile, WTVA 9 has added Saturday night news at 9:00 p.m. on its sister station WLOV 27. The half-hour newscast at 9:00, known as WLOV FOX News at 9:00, is now seen 7 nights a week. Previously, it was not on Saturdays and WCBI 4 (CBS/MyTV/CW) had that exclusivity on its 4.3 CW subchannel. Also, WTVA 9 has added a half-hour Sunday newscast at 5:00 p.m. that is also the ONLY ones on in the market since WCBI 4 doesn’t air an early-evening newscast on Sundays. This newscast is NOT simulcast on WTVA 9’s ABC subchannel.

Finally, the biggest change of all, WTVA 9 has introduced weekend morning news. The weekend edition of WTVA 9 News Today airs from 5:00-7:00 a.m. and provides two hours of the area’s ONLY weekend morning news and weather. This newscast is also NOT simulcast on the ABC subchannel as well.

The ABC subchannel will, however, continue to simulcast WTVA 9’s Saturday news at 6:00 and 10:00 as well as their Sunday news at 10:00 p.m. plus weekday mornings from 5:00-7:00 a.m. and weeknights at 5:00 and 10:00 p.m.

So much more local news that WTVA 9 and WLOV 27 provide now that it can basically smoke away WCBI 4’s competition and ratings. My goodness!

  1. Another god awful early hour for weekend morning news having it at 5:00a and 6:00a on Saturday and Sundays. Why even bother with weekend morning news if your going to have it on at that hour. If a choice between having weekend morning news at at god awful hour for weekends at 5:00a or 6:00a or no weekend morning news at all I would take the later or second choice any day. Why not have it at a more reasonable hour at 7:00a, 8:00a or even 9:00am on Saturday and Sundays all they have to do is move Weekend Today in another time slot. Its no wonder KOIN in Portland Orgeon decided to can its weekend morning news a few months back because their weekend morning newscasts were on at the same times as WTVA new weekend morning news will be on. A station deciding to have their weekend morning news at a god awful weekday hour on weekends is one of the reasons I rant about it on this blog seems like a crappy choice to have weekend morning news so early in the morning on a weekend when people sleep in. I hope WTVA weekend morning news does not make it or cancelled unless it is moved to a more reasonable morning hour on weekends.
