FIRST ON THE BLOG: Some small changes have occurred at two different Philadelphia stations. And yet, they do have something in common.
WPVI 6 has expanded its Saturday morning newscast by just a half-hour to 5:00 a.m. The Saturday edition of Channel 6 Action News This Morning now airs from 5:00-8:00 a.m. and then for another hour from 9:00-10:00 a.m. The 5:00 a.m. start now competes against KYW 3 (CBS) and WCAU 10 (NBC) for local news at that time in the market. The Sunday morning edition continues to start at 6:00 a.m.
Meanwhile, just down the dial, WPHL 17 has expanded its weekday morning newscast once again. Its only in-house local newscast production, PHL 17 Morning News, now airs for 90 minutes from 4:30-6:00 a.m. and that’s just before the syndicated morning program, morning dose., from 6:00-8:00 a.m. In terms of competition at 4:30 a.m., it now competes with all the major Philly stations: KYW 3 and WPVI 6 at 4:30 a.m., WCAU 10 and WTXF 29 at 4:00 and 4:30 a.m. In terms of overall in the market, WFMZ 69 (Ind) in Allentown will continue to start its weekday morning news, 69 News at Sunrise, at 5:00 a.m. for the time being.
And while WPVI 6 and WPHL 17 compete against one another in the morning, they join forces at 10:00 p.m. every night with the hour-long Channel 6 Action News at 10:00 on PHL 17 which has been established under an agreement since 2012 and has become a ratings watcher in the Delaware Valley, competing in a battle against WTXF 29’s long-time and established hour-long nightly 10:00 p.m. newscast as well as KYW 3’s half-hour nightly news on its sister WPSG 57. Plus, it also competes against Allentown-based WFMZ 69’s nightly 10:00 p.m. news.
Other than this, there are no other major additions or expansions to report on at this time.
