FIRST ON THE BLOG: The CW Plus is the same as The CW except they have much more control in terms of its schedule and programming. And there is an expansion of news for some carrying The CW Plus.
Four local stations are expanding their local morning news provided by their main station to a full hour starting Monday, September 11th and all of them will be detailed here:
- KHBS 40.2 in Fort Smith, Ark. and KHOG 29.2 in Fayetteville, Ark. will expand 40/29 News Sunrise on The Arkansas CW to a full hour and will air from 7:00-8:00 a.m. It will compete against KNWA 51 (NBC)’s hour-long morning newscast at 7:00 a.m. for sister station KFTA 24 (FOX) for local morning news at that time in the market.
- KBOI 2.2 and KYUU 35.1 in Boise – Nampa – Caldwell, Idaho will see their local morning news expand as well. KBOI 2 News This Morning on The CW 2.2 will also expand to a full hour and will also air from 7:00-8:00 a.m. However, it does join a crowded field as KIVI 6 (ABC) also produces an hour-long extension of its morning news at 7:00 a.m. for its sister station KNIN 9 (FOX) and even KTVB 7 (NBC) produces one as well for its digital subchannel, the Independent station Idaho’s Very Own 24/7, located on KTVB 7.2
- KHSL 12.2 in Chico – Redding, Calif. will go an hour as well. Action News NOW This Morning at 7:00 a.m. on Chico – Redding CW will also be on from 7:00-8:00 a.m. It will still be the ONLY fully-functioning local news hour at that time in the market even though it also faces against KRVU 21 (MyTV) which airs a simulcast of KTVU 2 (FOX)’s weekday morning news from 6:00-9:00 a.m.
- WCBI 4.3 in Columbus – Tupelo, Miss. goes to an hour as well and WCBI News Sunrise on CW 4 will air from 7:00-8:00 a.m., which while competing against WTVA 9 (NBC)’s local morning news at 7:00 a.m. for WLOV 27 (FOX) for local news at that time in the market, the latter will also be airing an 8:00 a.m. hour starting that day, pretty much overshadowing WCBI 4.3’s 7:00 a.m. expansion.
All CW Plus affiliates mentioned also air half-hour primetime newscasts. KHBS 40.2 / KHOG 29.2 and WCBI 4.3 air their half-hour primetime news at 9:00 p.m., seven nights a week. For KBOI 2.2, its only weeknights at 9:00 p.m. and for KHSL 12.2, just weeknights at 10:00 p.m.
And for those CW Plus affiliates that won’t be carrying local morning news at that time (including my new home market of Gainesville at WCJB 20.2), Maury will be seen instead at 7:00 a.m. starting 9/11.
So there is a local morning expansion, but it won’t be everywhere. At least its something as more changes are being announced in September.
