A small minor newscast change… #280.

KOTV-DT 6 / Tulsa (“KOTV 6”)

FIRST ON THE BLOG: Another Tulsa station is finally ready to offer some local competition at 4:00 p.m. that the market has otherwise hasn’t had any in 15 years. We’ll explain.

Starting August 5th, KOTV is adding an hour-long newscast at 4:00 p.m. The News on 6 at 4:00 will also provide Tulsa’s ONLY local newscast on at 4:30 p.m. but more than that, it will be Tulsa’s first competition to 4:00 p.m. news for KTUL 8 (ABC) in 15 years. Yes, 15 years since KTUL launched its half-hour 4:00 p.m. newscast in 2004.

Programming note too… Dr. Phil on KOTV is moving to 3:00 p.m. to replace the now-canceled show Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? and for the first time, KOTV will match sister station KWTV 9 (CBS in OKC) in terms of early-evening offerings with an hour at 4:00 followed by half-hour news at 5:00 and 6:00 p.m.

However, there’s been barely any promotion of this new newscast and we don’t even know who’ll be the new anchor team but do expect the weather to be handled by AMS/Sealed Chief Meteorologist Travis Meyer, one of the area’s most recognizable meteorologists.

We have yet to report on a major change on one television station in Savannah, especially in the morning. That will soon come for sure so stay tuned to the blog.

  1. Finally it has taken 50,000 eons or forever in a day for KOTV to get a 4:00 pm newscast. They should have gotten a 4:00 pm newscast a long time ago since they are a top rated station for newz in Tulsa and since there other station in KWTV in OKC already has a 4:00 pm newscast. KOTV new 4 pm newscast will be an alternative to the Sinclair owned station is the currently the sole station that offers 4 pm news in the Tulsa TV Market, People who may not like Sinclair stations local news content who want to see a 4 pm newscast will have a place to watch news on KOTV at 4 pm. If I lived in Tulsa I would not watch KTUL news. Plus it will be an hour long newscast. It is unusual for a Market like Tulsa to have one TV station with only a 30 minute 4:00 pm news, even 30 minute newscasts at 4:00 pm are unusual since most 4:00 pm newscasts are an hour long.

  2. IS the “writing on the wall” stating that every local affiliate in every local market go all “LIVE AND LOCAL” from now on? There are network affiliated TV stations that complain: “There must be room for strong syndication in our lineups.” I strongly agree. Stations having to go local all morning (exception of national news morning programs like CBS Morning News)

    • I wasn’t finished. Stations have to go local all morning (exception of national news like CBS Morning News) are setting themselves up for a 1 year migraine committing financial injury to themselves. It’s time to pay female newsies 21% more than their male counterparts plus confiscate their motherly rights.

  3. “It’s time to pay female newsies 21% more than their male counterparts plus confiscate their motherly rights”

Gayle King on CBS This Morning and Geneva Salvatore on CNN are female newsies.
