FIRST ON THE BLOG: It’s rare that I would have one story that focuses on nothing but newscasts being dropped. But here we are.
FIRST ON THE BLOG: A small addition is coming to Oregon’s largest market.
Surprisingly, only one newscast is debuting this weekend and its coming out of Oregon.
Saturday September 5th, 2015
- 6:00-7:00 AM: KOIN 6 News This Morning at 6:00 a.m.
KOIN in Portland. The station becomes the last in the market to add a weekend morning newscast and it will be anchored by Ellen Park, who joined the station a few weeks ago. This will compete against KGW 8 (NBC)’s KGW News Sunrise and the Saturday edition of KPTV 12 (FOX)’s FOX 12 News – Good Day Oregon.
Stay tuned to this Sunday, as I will have the first of two big newscast debuting weeks. Keep an eye on it, because newscasts will debut on both Monday (Labor Day) and Tuesday of this week. Stay tuned to The Changing Newscasts Blog.
Have a great extended weekend, everybody!
KOIN is the last Portland station to not have a weekend morning newscast. Starting September 5th, not anymore. And it will be the least amount out of any station already doing weekend morning news.
Starting Saturday September 5th, 2015, KOIN 6 will become the last station in the area to offer a weekend morning newscast by adding KOIN 6 News This Morning to both Saturdays and Sundays. The newscast will air from 6:00-7:00 a.m., competing against KGW 8 (NBC)’s KGW News Sunrise and KPTV 12 (FOX)’s Saturday 6:00 a.m. hour of FOX 12 News – Good Day Oregon. The newscast will be anchored by Eileen Park, who joins KOIN 6 from WNCN 17 (NBC) in Raleigh – Durham – Fayetteville. Not only she will anchor weekend mornings, but she will also report three days a week for the station. Her career has also been at WGBA 26 (NBC) in Green Bay – Appleton – Fox Cities and KIMA 29 (CBS) in Yakima, WA.
KOIN 6 will have the least amount of hours of weekend morning news from across the 4 stations as KATU 2 (ABC) does 2 hours, KGW 8 has 3 hours and KPTV 12 has 3 hours Saturdays and 2 hours Sundays.
According to a statement by KOIN 6’s President and GM, Adrienne Roark, which was obtained by FTVLive and from DePauw University, in which where Park graduated from:
“We are so excited to now be on the air seven mornings a week and to have someone as talented as Eileen to be part of this expansion. Eileen joins KOIN 6 with such an impressive background in journalism. We are excited to have her passion on our weekend anchor desk and her outstanding reporting skills during the week.”
Really late to the competition in Portland, but its better to be late than never in the weekend morning news competition in the TV market that the rest of Oregon hates.
