WNWO is now on at “Midday” in Toledo.

WNWO-TV 24 / Toledo (“NBC 24”)

FIRST ON THE BLOG: A new player has made its way into the Midday news scene in Toledo.

WNWO 24 has recently added a midday broadcast. The half-hour broadcast, titled NBC 24 News Midday, is on at 11:30 a.m. This makes this broadcast as the ONLY half-hour newscast on in this timeslot in the market as WTOL 11 (half-hour) and WTVG 13 (hour-long) deliver their midday broadcasts at Noon. This marks the second time, WNWO 24 has expanded as earlier this year, they added an hour-long 5:00 p.m. newscast. All of this, due to the many changes that have taken place at WNWO 24, since the station was brought by Sinclair Broadcast Group, last year. But its been a bumpy ride so far as the station has already taken out of Buckeye CableSystem’s lineups in Toledo before and that lasted 8 months until July of this year.

Can you believe it? The 3rd-place ranked station is airing more news in Toledo.

Newscasts debuting/expanding this week… Edition #4

No pictures will be seen, but tags will be involved for this post. There are too many newscasts debuting or expanding tomorrow and this week that it will be hard to showcase images of all stations involved. So, the biggest edition of newscasts debuting/expanding this week is here. And finally, here’s the list. The list is composed in time order in Eastern Daylight Time:

Monday September 8th, 2014:

  • 4:30-5:00 AM: ABC 57 News at 4:30 a.m.
  • 7:00-8:00 AM: ABC 57 News at 7:00 a.m. on CW 25 Michiana

WCIU in Chicago. WCIU 26’s so-called morning newscast is expanding to 3 hours, because of the success of the program and that it has recently beating WBBM 2’s 6:00 a.m. morning news in the ratings. How embarrassing for WBBM 2. Soon enough, this program will also beat WFLD 32 in morning news as well.

  • 11:00 AM-12:00 PM: NBC 5 Chicago News Midday

WHO in Des Moines. Central Iowa’s first 4:00 p.m. newscast will be on WHO 13.

  • 4:00-5:00 PM: Alabama’s 13 News at 4:00

  • 6:00-7:00 PM: The KSAT 12, 6:00 O’Clock News

KSAT in San Antonio. San Antonio’s #1 newscast at 6:00 p.m. expands to an hour. Makes sense for a station with #1 hour-long newscasts at noon and 10:00 p.m.

  • 4:00-4:30 PM: 3TV News Good Evening Arizona at 4:00

KTVK in Phoenix. With this expansion, Good Evening Arizona will now run from 4:00-6:30 p.m., followed by Entertainment TONIGHT at 6:30 p.m.

In Toledo, expansions are happening on Channels 13 and 24…

WNWO-TV 24 / Toledo (“NBC 24”)
WTVG 13 / Toledo (“13abc”)

FIRST ON THE BLOG (other than The Toledo Blade): Well well… isn’t this a great time in Toledo ? 2 stations are expanding their news operations by adding newscasts. One will be added very soon while the other is gonna be added as early as January. Let’s start with WNWO 24…

Starting September 8th, WNWO 24 will add an hour-long 5:00 p.m. newscast called NBC 24 News at 5:00. It’s an effort from Sinclair Broadcast Group (the un-godful owners of WNWO 24) to ramp up the station and make it’s newscasts compete with it’s rivals, once again. The newscast will be anchored by news director Jim Blue and Toledo news-veteran Laura Emerson, who returned to Toledo this year after anchoring and reporting for WPSD 6 (NBC) in Paducah, KY. Laura was part of WUPW 36’s original news team from 1996 until she left in 2012 (she left 4 months before WUPW 36’s in-house news department was shut down in favor of newscasts from WTOL 11). This could be good for a station that has always been in last place in the ratings. But there’s also another expansion…

… WTVG 13 is scheduled to launch CW 13 on September 1st at 4:00 a.m., bringing viewers in Northwestern Ohio, a CW over-the-air station for the very first time, as it would be on WTVG-DT 13.2 (replacing the Live Well Network, which is scheduled to shut down in January of 2015). This will help expand the presence of the CW network in Toledo and for WTVG as well. Why? Because WTVG 13 will launch an hour-long 10:00 p.m. newscast for CW 13, sometime as early as January. It would help expand the presence of 13abc Action News, which recently has been the #1 news station in Northwestern Ohio, displacing long-time leader WTOL 11.

The Toledo market is getting hot… very hot indeed, news-wise of course.
