FIRST ON THE BLOG: It’s rare that I would have one story that focuses on nothing but newscasts being dropped. But here we are.
FIRST ON THE BLOG: As one station continues to mark its end, at least in English, another station decides to do more. Both within two different markets.
Well… it’s a hard end. An end that people didn’t expect at all. But in San Diego, it’s coming true and in phases, XETV is shutting down and its an end of an era for one of the top CW affiliates in the country.
I haven’t done this in a while… list the newscasts that are debuting this weekend. But this one ain’t much of a debut, its actually an expansion.

- 10:00-11:00 PM: San Diego 6 News at 10:00
XETV in San Diego. The newscast is being expanded to a full hour from a half-hour on weekends. This comes after XETV 6 added an hour-long 4:00 p.m. newscast, earlier this week on Monday.
That’s all we got for this weekend. Have a great, long weekend!
Tomorrow is January 12th and its another day for Newscasts that will be debuting. Here is that list, by time order and by market size.

WFTS in Tampa Bay. The station will finally be up at 4:30 a.m., just like everybody else. Gives them 3 and a 1/2 hours of news now with the addition of the 9:00 a.m. hour, which it will compete against WTVT 13’s long-running and successful Good Day Tampa Bay. Dan Shaffer, Deiah Riley, Shay Ryan and Lindsay Logue are ready for the morning news.
- 4:30-5:00 AM: 11 News Today at 4:30 a.m.
WBAL in Baltimore. It only becomes the second station in the market to add a 4:30 a.m. morning newscast after WMAR 2’s 4:30 a.m. newscast. Jason Newton, Mindy Basara, Ava Marie and Sarah Caldwell are ready to get up earlier.
- 7:00-8:00 AM: CW 20’s Good Day Tennessee at 7:00 a.m.
- 8:00-9:00 AM: CW 20’s Good Day Tennessee at 8:00 a.m.

- 4:00-5:00 PM: WRAL News at 4:00 on FOX 50
WRAZ in Raleigh. It will air on WRAZ 50, due to WRAL 5 airing The Young and The Restless in its timeslot. It will be competing against WTVD 11’s ABC 11 Eyewitness News at 4:00. Gerald Owens, Jackie Hyland and Mike Maze will all helm the broadcast.
- 4:00-5:00 PM: San Diego 6 News at 4:00
XETV in San Diego. Its been a while but XETV 6 is ready to expand once again. This newscast will compete with KNSD 39 and KSWB 69 for hour-long 4:00 p.m. news in San Diego. Jim Patton, Neda Iranpor and Sabrina Fein are ready for this one.
- 7:00-8:00 PM: ABC 7 Eyewitness News at 7:00 on WCIU, The U
WCIU in Chicago. Chicago’s only 7:00 p.m. newscast is ready to go. The newscast will be produced by WLS 7. The newscast is helmed by Linda Yu, Hosea Sanders, Cheryl Scott and Jim Rose.
I was the first to report that XETV will add a 4:00 p.m. newscast starting January 12th and it took TVSpy today to report that. Good grief. But what I didn’t know from TVSpy is that XETV is ready to expand on weekends as well.
XETV 6 is expanding their weekend 10:00 p.m. newscast to an hour, starting January 17th which is next weekend, not this weekend. The previously half-hour show will now fully compete with the weekend editions of KUSI 51’s KUSI News at 10:00 and KSWB 69’s FOX 5 News at 10:00 for hour-long weekend news at 10:00 p.m. in the market. It also becomes the third California TV market to have 3 primetime newscasts on for an hour, 7 nights a week (Sacramento: KCRA 3 on KQCA 58, KOVR 13 and KTXL 40; Los Angeles: KTLA 5; KCAL 9 and KTTV 11).
XETV 6’s News Director, Don Shafer:
“We will be producing stories aimed at the viewers who are home at that time of the day with a good mix of the day’s news but also stories and interviews on health, pocketbook issues that will better prepare our viewers for the future and the latest on the San Diego arts and entertainment scene. It will be a well-rounded and interesting hour.”
The latest on San Diego arts and entertainment? I don’t know about that but to me, I think this is a good move for XETV 6.
FIRST ON THE BLOG: Thanks to a forum post that I read on TVNewsTalk.net, I have first exclusive details about this and yes, another news expansion is coming to an already heavy news producer market in San Diego. And this may be my last post of the year, regarding an addition or an expansion of some kind.
XETV 6 is ready to add an hour-long 4:00 p.m. newscast starting January 12th. San Diego 6 News at 4:00, as it will be called, will be anchored by Jim Patton and Neda Iranpor with San Diego 6 Weather from chief meteorologist Sabrina Fein. With this addition, XETV 6 will have some pretty steep competition from the gecko as it will join KNSD 39’s long-established hour-long NBC 7 News at 4:00 and KSWB 69’s recently added earlier this year and hour-long FOX 5 News at 4:00 for local news in that timeslot in the market.
Just shows you that after the new year celebrations end, more and more local news is only coming towards our way.
