CONFIRMED: WPIX will air a 6:00 p.m. newscast, starting April 20th.

WPIX 11 / New York City (“PIX 11”)

FIRST ON THE BLOG: Remember this from February of this year? There was rumors out there that WPIX will add a weeknight 6:00 p.m. newscast as early as this Spring. Well its spring all right and I can tell you that just by looking at all the TV listings, its about to come to a reality.

WPIX 11 will add a half-hour 6:00 p.m. weeknight newscast starting next Monday April 20th, 2015. The newscast, mostly likely could be anchored by Tamsen Fadal and John Muller, will be competing against the BIG giants in New York City… WCBS 2, WNBC 4, WNYW 5 and WABC 7, along with the Spanish-language newscasts on WXTV 41 (UNI) and WNJU 47 (TMD). Again, they could be adding this due to the success of the hour-long 5:00 p.m. newscast that WPIX 11 has recently seen earlier this year and at times, beating WNYW 5 at 5:00 p.m in the A25-54 or A18-49 category. But remember, this is New York City and they are competing against BIG giants. But, you could see Mr. G doing the weather and Scott Sanford doing Sports at the 6:00 p.m. news as well.

With WABC 7 still #1 in New York and still, the most-watched television station in America, don’t catch WPIX 11 to catch up anytime soon.

  1. I think people are getting tired of local newscasts on TV stations that are affiliated with the big three networks ABC, NBC, and CBS, since FOX doe’s not air a network national newscast. In the past few years you have seen local TV stations that are independent such as KTLA, WGN, WPIX, and FOX affiliates expanding like WZTV Grand Rapids, KCPQ Seattke, KSWB in San Diego, KOKI, Tulsa expanding their evening news blocks and long time affiliated network stations such as WISH-TV going independent. Sometimes I thinks the major networks are starting to demand local TV stations to run network national news pieces on their local newscasts. In a sense if you watch a local newscast on an NBC station and you see a national NBC news feed on local news you in a since have a hybrid of a local and national newscast. I have seen on local newscasts the same exact news story you would see on a national newscast run on a local newscast. For example I have seen a national news piece on the Today Show and later that day the same national news piece I saw on the Today Show was aired on the local newscast. I think people want more in-depth local news and independent TV stations such as WPIX, KTLA, WGN, etc, can offer that kind of more in-depth local news that you won’t see on the big 3 network affiliated local newscasts. I think people want real local news and not infotainment type news.

  2. I am surprised that WPIX does not have a 9:00 am newscast. Other Tribune owned TV stations have 9:00am newscasts like KTLA, and WGN. WPIX should have a 9:00am morning newscast to compete with WNYW Faux 5 9:00am newscast. I know WPIX had a 4:00am morning newscast a few years ago but canned it I don’t know why they canned its 4:00am newscast with New York City being a commuter market you would have a news audience at 4:00am

    • They caned the 4am hour because ratings were really not that good for WPIX 11. The same could have been said for the 9am hour if they did add a 9am hour because WPIX 11’s morning newscast doesn’t have as strong ratings as their other sister stations like KTLA 5 and WGN 9.

  3. Maybe in the past WPIX did not really want to invest money in their news that could have been the reason their ratings weren’t as strong as KTLA or WGN. With the PIX adding a 6:00pm newscast maybe its a start for WPIX to invest more into their news and if successful they could add the 4:00am news again and I could say welcome back 4:00am news on WPIX, add a 9:00am news. and maybe a midday news

      • I think a few years ago The PIX had a 6:00pm or 6:30pm newscast and canned it and they cut it because of low ratings. Then they decided to have a 5:00pm news its now successful and now they are reinstating the 6:00pm news. You never know in the news business what a TV station may do.
