XETV will expand their 10:00 p.m. weekend newscast, starting next weekend.

XETV-TDT 6 / San Diego (“San Diego 6”)

I was the first to report that XETV will add a 4:00 p.m. newscast starting January 12th and it took TVSpy today to report that. Good grief. But what I didn’t know from TVSpy is that XETV is ready to expand on weekends as well.

XETV 6 is expanding their weekend 10:00 p.m. newscast to an hour, starting January 17th which is next weekend, not this weekend. The previously half-hour show will now fully compete with the weekend editions of KUSI 51’s KUSI News at 10:00 and KSWB 69’s FOX 5 News at 10:00 for hour-long weekend news at 10:00 p.m. in the market. It also becomes the third California TV market to have 3 primetime newscasts on for an hour, 7 nights a week (Sacramento: KCRA 3 on KQCA 58, KOVR 13 and KTXL 40; Los Angeles: KTLA 5; KCAL 9 and KTTV 11).

XETV 6’s News Director, Don Shafer:

“We will be producing stories aimed at the viewers who are home at that time of the day with a good mix of the day’s news but also stories and interviews on health, pocketbook issues that will better prepare our viewers for the future and the latest on the San Diego arts and entertainment scene. It will be a well-rounded and interesting hour.”

The latest on San Diego arts and entertainment? I don’t know about that but to me, I think this is a good move for XETV 6.
