KRGV will be expanding their 4:00 p.m. newscast from 30 minutes to an hour.

KRGV-TV 5 / Weslaco – Brownsville – McAllen – Harlingen, TX (“KRGV Channel 5”)

FIRST ON THE BLOG: KRGV is making a secret move on September 14th. How do I know its a secret? Because I tried to ask KRGV on this, but they said to me on their Facebook page…

“No public announcement is being made at this time about a date or any time expansions. Thank you.”

See? They are hiding a secret. Wanna know what it is? Okay. I’ll tell you.

Starting Monday September 14th, 2015, KRGV 5 will be expanding their weekday 4:00 p.m. newscast from 30 minutes to an hour. Channel 5 News at 4:00 has always been RGV’s ONLY option for local news at 4:00 p.m., but now KRGV 5 will fill the 4:30 p.m. half-hour timeslot that’s currently filled by Entertainment TONIGHT with another local newscast at 4:30 p.m., creating RGV’s first-ever 90-minute local news block from 4:00-5:30 p.m. Once the newscast is expanded to an hour, KRGV 5 will also have a distinction of being the ONLY station in RGV with 3 straight hours of news from 4:00-7:00 p.m. with KRGV 5’s Channel 5 News at 4:00 from 4:00-5:00, Channel 5 News at 5:00 from 5:00-5:30, ABC World News TONIGHT with David Muir from 5:30-6:00 and the other hour-long newscast, Channel 5 News at 6:00 from 6:00-7:00 p.m.

Cary Zayas will continue her role as KRGV 5’s soon-to-be expanded 4:00 p.m. newscast. First Warn 5 Weather will continue to be delivered by long-time station veteran and Chief Meteorologist, Tim Smith. The expanded newscast will displace Entertainment TONIGHT and will either find a new timeslot on KRGV 5 or will be displaced from KRGV 5’s airwaves.

All I know is that KRGV 5 will continue to be #1 with this new expanded edition at 4:00 p.m. Everybody watches KRGV 5 anyways and it will continue to do so, because its always been Breaking News. Breaking Stories.

  1. I wonder if KVEO-TV NBC 23 will sometime in the future expand into a full scale news operation with morning, midday and 6pm news instead of just having a wimpy 5pm and 10pm newscast. There are really only 2 full scale news stations in the Brownsville/Harlington TV Market. KGBT and KRGV

      • There is no Univision station in Brownsville. However, Entravision Communications does have a bureau in that city which is in charge of covering Cameron County in the Rio Grande Valley. Also, KFXV is FOX 2 News, which also houses the CW channel 48.4/67.1. KFXV FOX 2 News has a morning show called “Good Day Valley” that airs every day at 7 am. Their prime time newscast airs at 9 pm where their news slogan is, “At 9 it’s news, and at 10 it’s history.” a slogan often used by FOX affiliates that air their newscasts during the 9 p.m. slot.

    • Brownsville and McAllen are about 1.5 hours apart. So technically, no there is not a Univision station in Brownsville. The Univision station is in McAllen.

Pertaining to the Channel 5 post, just because they deny something doesn’t make it true.

Do they teach you anything in your journalism classes?

If officials tell you something and you twist their words, that is slander, mister.

  2. This is crazy too much news and they repeat the same thing over again…My favorite show ET being replaced by news. I can not even watch the Jimmy kennel show live at 1035 pm like most television markets in the country because channel 5 repeats more of same..
