KIAH is expanding its “NewsFix” format to a new newscast at 10:00 p.m.

KIAH 39 / Houston (“CW 39”)

FIRST ON THE BLOG: Well… it seems like the NewsFix format is working at KIAH, because they are about to add a 10:00 p.m. newscast.

Starting Monday September 14th, 2015, KIAH 39 will be adding a weeknight half-hour local newscast at 10:00 p.m., continuing with CW 39 NewsFix at 10:00. The anchor-less, V/O-only format of delivering news stories has apparently somewhat done so well, that KIAH 39 will try this format at 10:00 p.m. in which it will compete against the BIG 3 stations in Houston, KPRC 2 (NBC), KHOU 11 (CBS) and KTRK 13 (ABC). The newscast will feature edgy and opinionated editorials, along with unique franchises that consumers can’t get anywhere else.

KIAH 39’s V.P. and G.M., Roger Bare:

“We understand the independent streak of Houstonians and reflect those beliefs by offering a contemporary, highly-produced newscast that’s clearly different from our very traditional competitors. The new, expanded half-hour at 10 will bring Houstonians important information they need before going to bed. We’re excited to go head-to-head with others in an already competitive time period.”

KIAH 39’s Director of News and Content, Gary Jaffe:

“We bring real world commentary and authenticity to the events and topics that matter to our neighbors. NewsFix presents news in an entertaining and fun way while never failing to inform and empower our consumers… we talk to them as they would each other.”

Another local late-night newscast is coming to Houston. This could be described as a shocking move and a continuing move by Tribune’s CW affiliates to add newscasts at 11:00pm ET/10:00pm CT time slots.

  1. KIAH 39 and KDAF 33 have been airing NewsFix for a couple years. It still remains to be seen if Tribune has plans to expand it to other stations (like WPHL 17, KRCW 32, WDCW 50, and WSFL 39). WPHL and KRCW have news share agreements with WPVI 6 and KGW 8, respectively. We don’t know if Tribune plans to end either of them anytime soon. WSFL used to have WTVJ 6 produced 10PM newscast that ended in August 2008. WDCW doesn’t have a 10PM newscast to compete with Fox.

      • Yes because how was WSFL’s EyeOpener, able to compete against WSVN’s Today in Florida?

        WSFL’s EyeOpener = 2 hours
        WSVN’s Today in Florida = 5 hours

        WSFL 39 = nobody watches.
        WSVN 7 = everybody watches.

WSFL 39 = no news at all.
WSVN 7 = more news than anybody else in SFL.

Its pretty obvious why WSFL 39 no longer airs EyeOpener… low ratings and low popularity. Plus, it was infotainment, more into entertainment, rather than real hard news.
