WIVB is about to go early in the evening with more news at 4:00 p.m.

WIVB-TV 4 / Buffalo (“WIVB 4”)

FIRST ON THE BLOG (other than The Buffalo News): Speaking of Buffalo, there will yet be even more news focusing on Western New York coming in March. If you thought 24-hour news in Buffalo wasn’t enough (TWC News – Buffalo), then get ready for more over-the-air news, thanks to WIVB.

Starting in late March, WIVB 4 will add a weekday hour-long 4:00pm newscast. News 4 at 4:00 will be home to Buffalo and Western New York’s ONLY local newscast at 4:00pm in the market, at least over the air. If you have cable, then you got Time Warner Cable News – Buffalo delivering 24-hour local news there.

According to The Buffalo News, the newscast was supposed to debut on Monday February 8th, after the Super Bowl on Sunday, but the station isn’t ready yet. No start date has been announced for the 4:00pm debut.

No word as to who will anchor or deliver the 4Warn Weather on the new newscast, but it will replace Inside Edition (4:00pm) and Jeopardy (4:30pm) in that timeslot and will compete against Ellen on WGRZ 2 (NBC) and two episodes of Hot Bench (4:00-5:00pm) on WKBW 7 (ABC).

WIVB 4’s News Director, Scott Levy:

“We felt there was an opportunity to expand the News 4 brand. Research shows Western New York has some of the highest news viewership in the nation. Our growth at 4:30 a.m. and 10 p.m. demonstrate that desire for more news.”

And yes, the 5:00-6:30pm news block will remain the same. So if you don’t like more local news, then this is not right for you. If you’re a news junkie, then this is welcome news for those who love to watch local news all the time.

  1. Welcome back 4:00pm newscast in the Buffalo TV Market. I know a few years back WKBW-TV had a 4:00pm newscast PM Buffalo. PS WIVB is owned by the same company as KRQE-TV in my city of Albuquerque which also has 4:00pm news and the only 4:00pm newscast in the ABQ Market. We will see what will happen when Media General becomes Nexstar and if it will affect any news on KRQE or WIVB since both stations are owned by Media General.

  2. The Buffalo TV Market has made inroads with expanding news in the past few years with WIVB getting 4:30am and 4:00pm news and WKBW getting Saturday and Sunday Morning news.

  3. All that news is just plain stupid !!! Simply put. Why don’t you go on the air 24/7 ?? I won’t be watching. We will now watch Ellen and then SCOTT LEVIN. A waste of a lot of air time.
